Welcome to the Richmond Youth Honour Choir!
The Richmond Youth Honour Choir represents some of the best young singers in our city and the Metro Vancouver area. We sing a wide variety of musical styles, from Bach to Broadway and everything in between. In past seasons, the RYHC has performed for the Emperor of Japan, and at the 2010 Winter Olympics. For our 10th anniversary We were privileged to premier our own commission, “Listen to the Music” by Timothy Corlis with the VYSO Junior Strings, which has become not only a favorite of ours, but sold thousands of copies since it’s premier. We enjoy participating in a variety of Choral Festivals and collaborating with other choirs and performance groups. We enjoy hosting other choirs from across Canada and international places. Choirs we have hosted include the Canadian Mennonite University Choir from Winnipeg as well as the West Gate Concert Choir and Band, also from Winnipeg. We hosted the Wakayama Children’s Choir from Richmond’s sister city, Wakayama, Japan. Two years later we returned the visit and toured to Japan, which included singing in Wakayama with the choir! This past year was a very exciting year for us as we celebrated our 15th Anniversary Season in conjunction with Canada 150! It is poetic that our 15th Anniversary year aligned with Canada’s 150th Anniversary year! We celebrated with the premier of our newest commission with Juno-nominated composer, Timothy Corlis, this time including our own Richmond Delta Youth Symphony Senior Strings accompanying “We Will Sing You Home”. It was received with a long standing ovation and is already drawing the attention of international choirs. Then our touring choir represented not only Richmond but all of BC at UNISONG in Ottawa for July 1st where we also had several personal performances which included singing in the Rotunda at Parliament Hill as guests of MP Alice Wong! Upon our return to Richmond we had an exchange concert with the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus which was a wonderful night of music and friendship making. So now on to the next season!
The theme for our 2017-18 season is “The Beat Goes On!” What else could it be?There are so many extraordinary things planned for our 16th season, not the least of which is our Second International Tour, in July of 2018. Select members of the RYHC Choirs will have opportunity to tour, this time to Windhoek, Namibia, Africa to do an exchange with the COTA Youth Choir conducted by Fanie Dorfling and then stopping in Austria on our way home to get close with Mozart! (Sneak peak for next year, the COTA Choir will be returning to visit us and we will host them, sharing a BC Island Tour and then returning to Richmond to host our own Festival as we know other local choirs will want to have an opportunity to sing with them too!) But to start the season, we will have a special performance right in September where the RYHC and Alumni members with adult guest choir members will be performing our celebrated commission “We Will Sing You Home” on the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Theater with a professional orchestra!! We always love making new friends at Culture Days in Richmond. We will have a fantastic Family FUNdraising Night on October 21st that will include a gourmet BBQ, a Silent and NOT so Silent Auction, Family and Friends Dancing with professional caller, Brent Mawdsley! We will raise the roof in fun, dancing the night away with us and hopefully raise the roof in funds to support all our programming! We look forward to our Development Camp at Camp Squeah in the fall with our amazing returning guest clinician Paula Kremer, Conductor of the acclaimed Vancouver Cantata Singers! This training camp is always a highlight of the choir members through the year! Also as a special project, a select group of RYHC Singers will also be part of a professional Theater Production with Alley Theater whose production will open in downtown Vancouver on November 11, 2017 and run for a week until the 19th! In December, we will have our annual “Holiday Harmonies Concert” which is always a favorite for the community to attend and get in the holiday spirit! We always enjoy performing on our annual Richmond School Tour. Then we will be the host choir for the BC Choral Fest, Children’s track right here in Richmond! How exciting that will be!
